Washington “Allows” India to Buy Russian Oil

In what may sound like a geopolitical green signal, the United States has reportedly indicated that India can continue purchasing Russian oil. A curious statement because sovereign nations typically don’t require permission slips to buy energy for their economies.
Strategic Policy & Background
Ever since the war in Ukraine began in 2022, Russian crude has become a lightning rod in global politics. Western countries imposed sanctions on Moscow, hoping to choke off the Kremlin’s revenue stream. But global energy markets do not run on political declarations alone they run on supply, demand, and price.
And India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, has been very clear about one thing: energy security comes first.
When Russian crude started selling at a discount, New Delhi did what any pragmatic government would do bought it. The logic was simple. If you are importing more than 80% of your crude oil, you look for the best deal available.
This is precisely why Russian oil quickly became a significant part of India’s energy basket.
Meanwhile, Western capitals initially frowned upon the move. Yet the same global system that criticizes discounted Russian crude has quietly found ways to keep Russian molecules flowing through the market sometimes indirectly.
That’s where the irony kicks in.
Defense & Geo-Political Implications
Now Washington saying India can continue buying Russian oil almost sounds like a diplomatic formality dressed as generosity. But the reality is far less dramatic.
India’s position has remained unchanged from the beginning. New Delhi has consistently argued that global energy markets cannot be politicized to the point where developing economies suffer.
After all, India is home to over 1.4 billion people. Cheap energy is not a luxury here it is an economic necessity.
And let’s be honest. If the world’s largest economies were forced to choose between geopolitical messaging and affordable energy, the choice would rarely favor the former.
So yes, Washington may say India can buy Russian oil.
But New Delhi never really needed a nod.
Because when it comes to energy security, India’s policy has always been straightforward: buy where the price works.
Strategic Path Forward
And permission? That was never part of the equation.
