Oasis of Energy Security’: India Claims 60-Day Oil Buffer Amid Global Supply Fears

As the West Asia conflict triggers tremors across global energy markets, the Indian government has moved to quell domestic anxiety. In a high-level briefing on Thursday, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) asserted that India holds enough crude oil and fuel stocks to last approximately 60 days, dismissing reports of a crippling energy crisis as "malicious misinformation."
Strategic Policy & Background
The announcement comes at a critical juncture, as tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran have effectively choked the Strait of Hormuz, the primary artery for India's energy imports.
The 60-Day Shield: Strategic and Commercial Reserves
To counter panic buying at petrol pumps, the Centre detailed the nation's multi-layered storage strategy. India currently possesses a total stocking capacity of 74 days, with the current "active" cover sitting at two months.
Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR): Underground rock caverns in Visakhapatnam, Mangaluru, and Padur hold emergency crude. While these caverns are currently about two-thirds full (providing roughly 9.5 days of cover at full capacity), they act as a vital last line of defense.
Commercial Stocks: The bulk of the 60-day buffer is held by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in the form of crude oil, petrol, and diesel at refineries and depots.
Secured Procurement: The Ministry confirmed that crude supplies for the next 60 days have already been "tied up" with 41 different global suppliers, diversifying away from the volatile Middle East toward the US, Russia, and Australia.
Addressing the LPG Shortage
While long queues have been reported at LPG distributors, the government insists the "shortage" is a result of panic booking rather than a supply failure.
Defense & Geo-Political Implications
"India is producing more LPG than it needs to import," the Ministry stated, noting that domestic refinery production has been ramped up by 40%.
Current LPG Status:
Stock on Hand: 800,000 tonnes of LPG (800 TMT) are currently en route or secured.
Daily Delivery: Over 50 lakh (5 million) cylinders are being delivered daily across the country.
Import Shift: With the Strait of Hormuz disrupted, India has doubled imports from Argentina and increased shipments from the United States.
Action Against ‘Misinformation’
The government’s "Oasis of Energy Security" claim is a direct rebuttal to viral social media posts suggesting an imminent fuel lockdown. Officials warned that "deliberate, coordinated misinformation" is driving demand spikes in some areas, with sales jumping by over 50% in just 48 hours.
The Bottom Line:
Strategic Path Forward
All 100,000+ retail fuel outlets remain operational. The Centre has directed OMCs to increase credit to petrol pumps and keep depots open 24/7 to ensure the "last mile" of the supply chain remains unbroken.
