New Delhi: In a major leadership transition for the Indian Armed Forces, the Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). Currently serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Seth will take over from General Upendra Dwivedi on June 30, ushering in a new chapter for the world’s second-largest standing army at a time of rapidly evolving security challenges and military modernization.
The appointment places one of the Army’s most experienced operational commanders at the helm of the force. Commissioned into the prestigious Armoured Corps in December 1986 after graduating from the National Defence Academy (NDA), Lt Gen Seth brings nearly four decades of military experience spanning combat operations, strategic planning, force modernization, and high-level command responsibilities.
Throughout his distinguished career, Lt Gen Seth has held several critical appointments across the Indian Army’s command structure. He has commanded an armoured regiment, an armoured brigade, a strike corps, the Delhi Area, South Western Command, Southern Command, and most recently served as Vice Chief of Army Staff. His extensive experience across operational and strategic domains is seen as one of the key factors behind his elevation to the Army’s highest position.
Military analysts view the appointment as a continuity choice at a crucial time for India’s defence establishment. The Indian Army is currently undertaking one of its most ambitious transformation programs since independence, focusing on technology-driven warfare, integrated theatre commands, artificial intelligence, drone warfare, cyber capabilities, and indigenous defence production. Lt Gen Seth has been closely associated with several modernization initiatives and is regarded as a strong advocate of the “Make in India” defence ecosystem.
His tenure is expected to coincide with a period of significant strategic challenges. The Army continues to maintain high operational readiness along both the Line of Actual Control with China and the Line of Control with Pakistan. Simultaneously, military planners are preparing for future conflicts that may involve multi-domain warfare integrating land, air, cyber, space, and electronic warfare capabilities. Defence experts believe Lt Gen Seth’s background in operational command and modernization will be particularly valuable in navigating these evolving threats.
One of the notable aspects of Lt Gen Seth’s career has been his emphasis on future-ready military structures. During his command of the Southern Command, he played a prominent role in promoting integrated combat formations and modernization initiatives, including the operationalization of new concepts designed for multi-domain operations. These experiences are expected to influence the Army’s future doctrinal evolution under his leadership.
Academically, Lt Gen Seth is considered one of the Army’s most accomplished officers. An alumnus of the NDA, Defence Services Staff College, Army War College, National Defence College, and advanced military institutions abroad, he consistently excelled during professional military education courses. His reputation as a scholar-soldier has earned him respect across the armed forces.
His appointment also continues a remarkable military legacy. He is the son of Lieutenant General Krishna Mohan Seth, a former Adjutant General of the Indian Army, making him part of a distinguished family tradition of military service. Yet colleagues often note that his rise through the ranks has been built on his own operational achievements and leadership credentials.
As Army Chief, Lt Gen Seth will oversee a force of more than a million personnel while guiding critical modernization projects, operational deployments, recruitment reforms, and technological integration efforts. He will also play a key role in advancing jointness among the three services as India moves toward greater military integration through theatre command structures.
His appointment comes at a time when India’s military is increasingly focused on self-reliance, indigenous weapons systems, and preparing for the challenges of twenty-first-century warfare. From drones and artificial intelligence to cyber operations and next-generation combat systems, the Army’s future direction will largely be shaped under his stewardship.
For the Indian Army, the elevation of Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth represents more than a routine change of command. It signals continuity in modernization, operational preparedness, and strategic transformation. As General Upendra Dwivedi prepares to demit office, the responsibility of leading India’s largest military service now passes to an officer whose career has been defined by command experience, professional excellence, and a vision for a technologically advanced fighting force.
